Synthetic fragrance Vs Natural fragrance:
Synthetic fragrance – They are synthetic compounds derived from petroleum and natural gas, known as petrochemicals. Natural fragrance – Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that retain the natural smell and flavor, or “essence” of their source. They are derived from botanical ingredients that are harvested from the earth such as: flowers, fruits, sap, seeds or skin of the plant, as well as the bark, leaves, roots, resins or wood of certain trees. They have tremendous healing properties…
Essential Oils contain very concentrated properties of the herb or plant they are derived from. And for this reason they are to be used in a diluted form to reap their benefits. How to use:
NEVER use any E.O. straight on the skin. Undiluted use on the skin can cause irritation or an allergic reaction in some people. ALWAYS dilute with carrier oils as mentioned below.
- Children 3yrs to 6yrs of age – .25% dilution i.e. 1 drop 💧 per 4tsp carrier oil.
- Adolescent n adults with poor immune system- 1% dilution i.e. 1 drop 💧 per 1 tsp carrier oil.
- Healthy Adult- 2% dilution i.e. 2 drops per 1 tsp carrier oil.
And hence I always do a .25% dilution in my body butter and lotion DIYs. And I don’t prefer adding them in my lip balm DIYs…
Words of Caution:
- Always store E.O. in glass bottle away from direct sunlight.
- ALWAYS patch test it first on your arm, to ensure you are not allergic to it.
- Do not overdo on the use of any E.O. in DIYs. Use as minimal as possible.
- Buy best quality, organic certified E.O. though they are expensive.
- Since E.O. influences certain hormone secretions, E.O. are therefore not advised for use by infants and are to be used in a very diluted qty for kids – 0.25%, pregnant women & nursing moms – up to 1% dilution. Synthetic fragrance is anyways a big NO…
- Few oils generally considered photosensitive are: orange, lime, lemon, grapefruit, and bergamot – they may make the skin more sensitive to the sun. Do your research before trying any new E.O.!
